Editorial Reviews

This handbook is a comprehensive self-assessment manual for all neurosurgical residents trying to juggle the tremendous amount of information that is crucial to becoming an excellent neurosurgeon as well as passing the written boards. The second edition offers an additional 200 questions and answers...also presents several anatomical dissections...which are very valuable in obtaining an adequate understanding of surgical anatomy. The questions are concise and well written and resemble the format of the boards. The format of the book allows the reader to work through each section individually and systematically to recognize areas of weakness. This is especially valuable to the busy resident with limited time, who needs to focus on areas in which his or her knowledge base is lacking. Packed with vital information covering all major categories, this handbook remains an indispensable tool for all residents and students of neurosurgery who attempt to obtain certification by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons. --Journal of Neurosurgery'Designed for board review preparation...It is a must buy for neurosurgical libraries, not only for residents' use but also for the current information on diverse topics in neurosurgery.' -- Doody's Book Reviews

From the Author

This work materialized as I was studying for the written portion of the Neurosurgery Board Examination; it is based largely on the question content areas revealed by the American Board of Neurological Surgery over the last several years. As the examination loomed closer, I was able to use the questions I had previously written to aid in the review process. The text should mainly benefit neurosurgery residents, but it may also appeal to residents in other neuroscience subspecialties. It is composed of over 1000 multiple choice questions in seven sections: Neurosurgery (132 questions, including 3 photographs), Clinical Neurology (214 questions), Neuroanatomy (185 questions), Neurophysiology (146 questions), Neuropathology (134 questions, including 52 photographs), Neuroradiology (83 questions, including 51 photographs), and Clinical Skills/Critical Care (126 questions). The proportion of questions in each section approximately mirrors that of the Neurosurgery written Board examination.{AQ1} Each section is accompanied by answers that have been referenced to major texts in the respective subspecialty areas. Unless the questions are deemed self-explanatory, brief explanations are also provided. Every attempt was made to ensure the clarity of questions and the accuracy of answers, but the reader is urged to refer to the references listed or to other standard textbooks for further detail should the need arise. Sincere gratitude is expressed to the faculty on the editorial board for their critique of the manuscript. I would also like to thank the editorial and production staff at Thieme for their excellent work. It is hoped that the use of this text for self-assessment will facilitate the arduous task of review for the Neurosurgery written Board examination
