This book is largely about everyday landscapes, though it seeks to evoke inspiration from the many beautiful environments both contrived and semi-natural with which Britain, and indeed the world, is endowed. If landscape architecture is to fulfil the great universal vision which its proponents claim for it then surely it cannot just be concerned with great houses or prestige corporate developments, estimable though these are. It should be involved at the level of the common environmental matrix in which these things, as well as ourselves, are set. This book is not then a tour in a coach with rose-tinted windows, from one heritage site to the next, nor a trip in an expense account car from one lucrative project to another.
